(sort of) breaking news. reuters social media policy. do not (re)tweet this.

Earlier this year Reuters released a social media policy that caused a small stir in the online community. The reason being that they have specifically instructed their reporters "not to scoop the wire" by breaking news stories on Twitter. It is clear that Reuters is trying to preserve their bread and butter, the wire, but in doing so, will they end up being cast aside? Will they make themselves irrelevant by forcing their reporters to maintain the traditional news cycle? These days stories are broken on Twitter all of the time, by both reputable and non-reputable sources alike and I think that if news organizations want to remain relevant, they need to let their reporters do so as well. Reuters seems to want the best of both worlds. Both to embrace social media and to have their reporters maintain their traditional ways. Not sure this will work in the long run. What are your thoughts?
